We commit to identifying and utilising appropriate resources for digital inclusion.
Being digitally included requires five key elements:
- The motivation to get online,
- The right device,
- An affordable and reliable internet connection,
- The skills to do what you need to do, and
- Access to services, apps and platforms that are inclusively designed.
We know that often, this costs money. Organisations struggling with increased pressure and reduced income might feel that digital inclusion just isn’t a priority for them.
This pledge recognises that we can all do something about digital exclusion – by being creative, thoughtful or ambitious in our approach. Understanding what we have at our disposal and how we can use it to lessen people’s exclusion is key to fulfilling this.
We don’t all have to provide laptops to our customers, or digital champions to deliver skills, but we can form part of a bigger solution if take the time to think about what we can invest.
What does good look like?
Some activities that could fulfil this pledge include:
- Undertaking an asset mapping exercise to understand what’s available and how it can be used.
- Developing a Digital Champion programme to help people upskill.
- Continuing to invest in digital inclusion work, and not letting it slip off the agenda.
- Donating used devices to organisations which refurbish and distribute them.
